The Kingdom Hearts Retrospective
Просмотров 196 тыс.3 месяца назад
An unprecedented collaboration. A first-time game director. And completely uncharted territory for one of the world's biggest entertainment conglomerates. This is a close look at 2002's Kingdom Hearts, including the game's conception, development, corporate red tape, director Tetsuya Nomura's meetings with the Walt Disney Company, and the creative decisions made for this landmark title. In 1992, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii, and Akira Toriyama took a business trip to America that would lead to them collaborating on one of the most celebrated games of all time. Death, Change, & "The End of Time" | A Doctor Who Video Essay
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.8 месяцев назад
As we await David Tennant's return to Doctor Who for the show's sixtieth anniversary, I decided to go back and reassess his regeneration story and the final episode produced by Russell T. Davies during his first tenure as showrunner. Specifically, we will be discussing the themes of death and change and how "The End of Time" fits into Doctor Who's overall legacy on that front. The Original Broly Movie Was Good, Actually
Просмотров 16 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Dragon Ball Super: Broly ushered unto us a beloved reimagining of one of the most divisive characters in the Dragon Ball franchise. But I feel much of the derision aimed towards the original incarnation of Broly is a bit misplaced due to the character's dumbing down in all of his appearances after the original 1993 film. So let's examine that original film and why, out of the original thirteen ...
The Final Fantasy V Retrospective

Following the success of Final Fantasy IV and its strong focus on character, Hironobu Sakaguchi and his team sought to pivot towards creating a more mechanically rich experience with Final Fantasy V. But with the worlds both inside and beyond Square's walls changing, would the fifth installment truly be as light on story as expected? Or would reality creep into the fantasy? The Final Fantasy IV Retrospective

With Final Fantasy III selling over one million units in 1990, Hironobu Sakaguchi and his team were preparing to send off the Famicom while also embracing the new 16-bit Super Famicom. But with so many of the original team moving on to different projects, Final Fantasy IV would prove to be a new beginning for the series as well as a celebration of what it has built so far. In this installment, ...
Tony Hawk's Underground is Special

Through the 2000s, the Tony Hawk video game series was a sales juggernaut for Activision, being a fun arcade experience that anyone could pick up and play with ease and a gateway into the world of skateboarding and skate culture for a generation. While many would consider one of the Pro Skater titles to be the peak of the series, I always saw the first Underground title as the zenith of what th...
The Final Fantasy III Retrospective

With the Super Famicom looming ahead, Final Fantasy III would be the last game in the series to be developed for Nintendo's 8-bit Family Computer. And while it would take cues from both of its predecessors, it would also embody the grief and hope of series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi during a tumultuous time in his young life. In this part of the Final Fantasy Retrospective, we'll be examining t...
Halo Infinite Kept the Promise | A Story Retrospective

After Halo 4 brought us a wonderful character story for the Master Chief, declaring their intentions to develop him beyond a player cypher going forward, 343 Industries dropped the ball hard with Halo 5: Guardians. Fans felt that it betrayed the emotional impact of Halo 4's climax and put the series' story on a path that only the most dedicated fans of the extended universe could follow. When t...
The Final Fantasy II Retrospective

After the surprise success of the first Final Fantasy in 1987, Hironobu Sakaguchi and his team immediately set out to work on a sequel which would be completely disconnected from the original. But what informed the creative direction of Final Fantasy II? What games were making waves in Japan in 1988? And how much of Final Fantasy II's overall design was influenced by Akitoshi Kawazu? In this in...

Final Fantasy has been a titan in the realm of video games for nearly 35 years, even since the release of Hironobu Sakaguchi's original Famicom game in 1987. But what were the circumstances of Final Fantasy's creation? What was the cultural context in which Final Fantasy was created and birthed into? How did works and creatives like Star Wars, Dragon Quest, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Haya...
The Holistic Brilliance of "Last Exit to Springfield"

The Simpsons sits among the pantheon of most successful and influential television series of all time with hundreds of episodes over the course of more than thirty seasons. It isn't uncommon to see lists of "The Greatest Episodes of All Time" or "The Top 10 BEST Simpsons Episodes", but the seventeenth episode of Season 4, "Last Exit to Springfield", has always intrigued me. Learning to Love Halo 4 - A Retrospective

When Halo 4 was originally released in 2012, there was a distinctly mixed response among longtime fans. But what about it was so polarizing? Why do some fans praise it while others loathe it? I decided to meet the game on its own terms, and came out of it with a new appreciation for 343 Industries' inaugural entry in the franchise they inherited. 0:00:01 actually close to the "But first we need to talk about the Industrial Revolution" meme 😂
This game did a lot of first in video games that is still a big part of the industry The end game, game play was never been done before in video games that i can remember which us staple today The effects of what you do in the past affecting the future is just innovation of technology you have at the time. Taking out random battle into something you have more decisions is a huge way to change people found tedious in the genre. That is now being more implemented for RPGs. The combined attacks still haven't been duplicated today. The visuals for super Nintendo was also pushing the hardware. They also did the most memorable at the time of the trope in a story where you are introduced to a pseudo villain, with Magus and the actual main villain is revealed later in the game. They did a great way by making hints of it early in the game.
moog sucked, Celeste was bad ass!
RIP Toriyama, Great Sensei.
Damn we will never get another Simpson video from him after the clout of the FF retrospective series (which I also adore)
You say you’re a massive fan but you mispronounce kyries name the whole video. Wondering if you even played these now or just made this video for attention
As you mentioned camera my camera in dark souls 1 moved by itself while walking on a scaffold type thing and sent me plummeting to my death. Thematic timing is incredible.
great video man!
Having played the game religiously on release like most of you, but having not played through it since then ( whereas I play ff6 every five years or so) I was shocked to hear all the issues with the localization. I was used to “spoony bard” and “all your base are belong to us” style translations, but I was so in awe with this game I seriously don’t remember any of the grammar issues, wild. 😵💫 It’s also wild to think about my buddy that I played this with after school is a cancer researcher lmao
Man i love this retrospective its the best one for Kingdom hearts and his voice makes it better
Just beat this game today on the original xbox, bought the game a week ago really scratched, got it resurfaced, and just kept playing til i beat it. Awesome game, as someone coming from the original thps trilogy. Didn't play thps4 and only played classic mode on thug 2. This game surprised me at how good it was despite the formula shift
Can you please do a video on the Remake when the whole trilogy comes out? Your script is REALLY good and I love the added information that goes beyond the game.
I would like to.
Spam remaster tony hawk underground’s
What do you think inspired the creator to make this video?
25:04 dark road players stand up
i guess franks was right..the rice feild makes lengends
Was enjoying the documentary until the leftoid comments
Toy Story was KH3 and I'm glad they waited it was executed much better on ps5 graphics.
A criminally underrated channel! Thank you for all the work you put into these videos.
You mention in the Presenting a Dystopia section that it's a "capitalist's dream," Shinra being able to raise prices as they please, how they can do anything they want, and it's just a cost of doing business. This is not just incorrect, it is a fundamental misunderstanding of what capitalism entails. There is no capitalism here; there's no free market, there's no competition, there's no alternatives, there's no free choice. Only abuse and exploitation. What is being represented here is corporatism, cronyism, socialism. In those systems, those who own the means of production do as they please, and are enabled by the government to do so.
This whole video, as every one you make, is fantastic. Specifically though, the analysis of Aerith's death was truly beautiful. In a world post FF7, with the compilation and remakes, hearing someone talk about the end of disc 1 in the context it existed in 1997, with all the weight and intent, is so cathartic and resonant. You kill it every single time, easily one of the best to ever do it.
You really articulated a lot of what makes this series of retrospectives so brilliant, especially this one.
"His aversion to making a game focused on time travel..." *looks at Another Eden and its endless fetch quests*
Dropped this in the first minute and half. Dropped like the Re: in re:coded.
Final Fantasy VII is one of my favorite games of all time, even though I played it only 3 years ago, without the nostalgia goggles. I didn't expect to love it so much, but here we are.
Halo 4 isnt a great halo game but it is a good game on its own merits
Have you ever check out the Halo 4 mods like Mythic Overhaul and Genesong Cut? These mods help us appreciate the campaign even more.
What an amazing documentary 👏 ❤️ 👌 looking forward to watching more of your content
Watch the entire lord of the rings trilogy or this... .hmmmm
Yaaai new video! This is becoming my favourite series about FF!
I think it's funny in the DS version (only one I've played) you can give Tellah the +50% MP augment and then he can cast Meteor without a hitch. Still dies in the cutscene though
